Shows I saw in Fall 2009
I decided to go see a bunch of theater this fall, much of it of completely unknown quality. The short answer is that I really liked the ART shows I saw, and overall enjoyed the piles of theater immensely. Goldstar half-price tickets and community theater mean you can try a lot of different things for under $20. Even without that, the ART tickets are probably worth it if the show looks appealing... Reading recommendations
I just remembered I *have* read something really good lately-ish that I haven't pushed excessively on people. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. I'd tell you about it, but wouldn't do it justice. It's a YA novel that manages to be very dark, and still hopeful, in addition to really really good. I'm reading the sequel (Catching Fire) now - it isn't quite as good, but is still excellent. Also excellent - the poem My Elf Policy, and the one in the comments it inspired. Anyone read anything amazing lately? Because clearly my giant stack of reading material isn't big enough... | | Thursday, October 8th, 2009 | | 11:49 pm |

Grr
So, I happened to stop by Pandemoneum this evening and picked up a flyer for Arisia. Looks like the musical guest of honor is SJ Tucker. Sweet! But wait! Arisia is January 15-18 - the weekend of MLJ day. What else is that weekend? Mystery Hunt - as usual! Apparently Mystery Hunt and Arisia are the same weekend since time immemorial. It makes sense, in a way - it's the most reasonable time for each. But they draw on almost the *exact* same circles of people. ::mutter:: One of these days, I'll have to skip Hunt, but I was planning to go back to Sages this year, which would make skipping out sad. ::sigh:: Excessive emotion brought to you by too much sugar and not enough useful days in January. | | 7:21 pm |
Music is educational
For quartzpebble, memnus, sithjawa and probably a decent number of other people on my friends list who like folk songs: lessons to be learned from folk songs / ballads, including the following pearls of wisdom: "Avoid navigable waterways. Don’t let yourself be talked into going down by the wild rippling water, the wan water, the salt sea shore, the strand, the lowlands low, the Burning Thames, and any area where the grass grows green on the banks of some pool. Cliffs overlooking navigable waterways aren’t safe either." "If you’re out hunting, make sure of your sight picture before you pull the trigger/loose your bow. Especially so if you’re near a navigable waterway or the greenwoodside." Avoid situations where the obvious rhyme-word is “maidenhead.” | | Monday, August 10th, 2009 | | 1:01 am |

Delicious food blogging
So - a friend of mine is blogging the meals he makes on a fairly regular basis. This comes with delicious pictures, and better yet, recipes. Anyone local want to make pizza after the eventual peach-picking adventure? | | Friday, August 7th, 2009 | | 2:07 am |
Electronic funhouse mirror - or - Calling all ray-tracers?
I want to build a funhouse mirror. I even have convoluted plans. But first, I'd like to try out a few electronic tests. Specifically, I want to find/build/acquire some program that will let you specify the surface of a funhouse mirror (at whatever resolution makes suff work, but basically, a set of x-y-z coordinates), then give it an image that is assumed to be directly in front of it, and see the resulting tranformation/map. Does anyone have any brilliant ideas? Ray tracing seems relevant here, but I know next to nothing about it. Any clues on where to get started would be excellent. | | Wednesday, August 5th, 2009 | | 11:58 pm |

Some things that were excellent at WVW
* Making s'mores and playing Mafia * Driving "The Vehicle" * Cooking Shepherds Pie w/Brian * At least four apple-based desserts * The most erudite water fight ever * Whitewater canoing * Dinosaur toast (see also midnight snack) * Irish music session, and Clay's fiddle playing * Eli's bedtime story about a mighty physicist * Not only catching a fish, but getting up the courage to bait the hook and clean it * Eating fresh-caught small mouth bass just out of the frying pan. * Excessive book swapping and recommending * Days starting at 1pm, plus naps * Oregonzola * Julie's pantomime * Many other things... (Omissions blamed on the hour of the night - the entire week was excellent, I'm just too sleepy to type more) ETA: * Spinning things - yarn and fire! | | Tuesday, May 5th, 2009 | | 10:11 pm |
Mayfair
In lieu of a relevant post, with details about my most recent adventures, I'm going to post about an artist I found at Mayfair. Greg Stones paints watercolors which mainly contain penguins, sheep, roses, aliens, robots, mermaids, arrows, cliffs and a handful of other things in different combinations. Eg: "Penguins and Archery" and "Martian, Penguins, Abduction". I picked up "Goodbye, Penguins" and a print of "Penguin vs. Reaper". Maybe actual content someday. ::shrug:: Anything is possible. | | Thursday, March 26th, 2009 | | 11:26 pm |
Last Paso Robles post
I've e-mailed everyone I think is coming to Phase 1 and everyone I think I'm visiting in Phase 2. If I missed you somehow, or your plans change so you can make it, comment here or send me an e-mail. See you soon! | | Wednesday, March 25th, 2009 | | 11:45 pm |

CA trip update
So, after lots of dithering about dates and times, and much stalling due to keyboard angst, I have an actual plan. ( Read more... ) | | Friday, January 30th, 2009 | | 12:47 am |
Reunion-thingy for East folk
So, I've been talking about having this mini-reunion thing in California, and it occurs to me I should actually plan things. So, if either of the two below apply, read on. * You're an Eastie person (of whatever floor), and are interested in a weekend in Napa Valley of games, booze and concentrated hanging out. * You're an Eastie person in the general LA area, and would be willing to put me up for a night or two.
